No one has ever seen the Yesterday's New Quintet perform. In fact, there is not even photo material available of these five. This will never happen, because this group only exists in the fantasy of producer Madlib who usually moves in hip-hop. After collaborations with Jay Dee (Jaylib) and MF Doom (Madvillain) and a CD with remixes from the Blue Note oeuvre (Shades Of Blue), it was time again for
… a project with his fictional five-piece. To this end he threw himself into the repertoire of Stevie Wonder. There is nothing to criticize about the drumming that Madlib performs under his own name (Otis Jackson Jr.), because it is rock solid. Wonderfully beautiful melodies, however, are broken to the bone by Madlib's clumsy keyboard playing. The depth of the originals is hard to find due to Madlib's lack of musical virtuosity, that also completely destroyed Shades Of Blue. Maybe a few piano lessons can take him a little further. Until then he can do better with hip hop. (AD)more
