The American Rogue Wave is part of Sub Pop Records (the label where Nirvana once started). The band has a predilection for the sixties, just like label mates The Shins. At times, Rogue Wave also resembles The Beatles and The Kinks. Yet the album is predominantly mournful and thus rubs against the indie tradition. Responsible for this show is songwriter Zach Rogue (also known from Desoto Reds), who
… started Rogue Wave as a solo project. In the song Be Kind, Rogue Wave shows her love for the Beatles, whistling birds fly around your ears and an acoustic guitar that is very reminiscent of Blackbird passes in review. While Sewn Up and Endless Shovel are happy uptempo songs again. Rogue Wave is not very original, but it fascinates enough to get through a drizzly Sunday afternoon. (JdD)more
