An original group deserves a special group name. Four classically trained musicians from the Antwerp Conservatory took the name Die Anarchistische Abendunterhaltung (often shortened to DAAU) from Herman Hesse's novel Der Steppenwolf. DAAU's music is not easy to categorize. The instrumentalists play an organic mix of Eastern European folk, pop, klezmer, classical, rock, jazz and electronica. They
… themselves think their sound comes closest to Jaga Jazzist, Nino Rota, Cinematic Orchestra and Pink Floyd. The quartet of cellist Simon Lenski, clarinetist Han Stubbe, accordionist Roel Van Camp and violinist Buni Lenski was expanded in the summer of 2004 with double bassist Fré Madou (known from the jazz and improvisation scene) and rock drummer Geert 'Bootsie' Budts. Compared to predecessor Tub Gurnard Goodness, DAAU's fifth album Domestic Wildlife is even more unconventional and daring. Beautiful melodic and swinging mood music are alternated with daring forays into free jazz, rock and electronica. The exciting Domestic Wildlife comes closest to the sound of the performances.
