In no way does The Magic Numbers' music match the prevailing trends in guitar country. No garage rock stripped down to the bone for these two ladies and two gentlemen, and new wave and punk funk are already a thing of the past. Yet The Magic Numbers were one of the surprises of 2005, the year in which their self-titled debut album was released and they managed to win over many festival crowds with
… their fresh, subdued folk pop. That line is continued on the second album Those The Brokes. Due to the striking appearance (beards and bellies) of the group members it is often suggested that the music of The Magic Numbers harks back to the westcoast pop of the sixties and seventies, but that is a misunderstanding. Atmosphere and introversion are paramount, catchy hooks and broad choirs cannot be discovered. Unfortunately not, you would almost say. Because it is true that the music is modest and subtle, but after a while those jaded, not very urgent songs start to disappoint. And do you almost long for a nice punk funnumber. (MS)more
