J-Stars was founded by Johan Steevens, the former frontman of the Dutch ska band The Beatbusters. Inspired by the success the group has after the collaboration with rapper Def P van de Osdorp Posse on the completely Dutch-language album Aangenaam (2001), Steevens decides to continue with Dutch-language ska from now on. He quits the Beatbusters and starts J-Stars. Onkruid is their second album, after
… Skadilemma from 2005. Steevens comes from the Betuwe and that is clearly evident: the songs on Onkruid have been given a slight Betuwe accent. Weeds have mainly become a party record, with the J-Stars keeping up the pace. A few slower or instrumental songs provide the variety, which is also necessary within the rather limited skagen genre. Above all, J-Stars is a band that should be seen and heard live, where their ska sounds will undoubtedly create a happy mood. (IV)more
