Rapper and (a little bit) singer Pete Philly is one of the few artists from the hip-hop scene who does not perform his raps in his mother tongue. While he was compared to his New York colleague Guru with his acclaimed debut Mindstate, on Mystery Repeats he is relentlessly dealing with this. He profiles himself as a rapper who considers originality to be of paramount importance and who easily masters
… a region of different styles. Producer Perquisite also appears to have broadened his musical horizon considerably. Using samples from Africa, Jamaica and Spain, he is responsible for probably the most jazzy tracks a rapper has ever worked with. Contributions from jazz guitarist Jesse van Ruller, Tjeerd Bomhof and Sven Woodside from Voicst, among others, reinforce this feeling. Together they show that in hip hop there is no need to shoot, insult and insult in order to achieve a brilliant result. (AD)more
