Away from the beaten path of a major label and ditto promotional campaigns, Ulrich Schnauss slowly but surely managed to attract a growing number of listeners. Simply through the old-fashioned but very effective method of word of mouth. In his music, Berliner Schnauss tries to break down the barrier between indie rock and electronica. He doesn't do that by linking rock riffs to pounding beats.
Rather, Schnauss tries to connect the ethereal and drawn-out ends of both genres. So 'Leftfield electronica' goes hand in hand with dreamy indie pop. Schnauss continues the musical line of the previous two albums and sees Goodbye as the last part of a trilogy. There are points of contact with Depeche Mode, but also with My Bloody Valentine of Air. They are interesting references that are also cited by Schnauss himself on his website. They just cannot hide the fact that Goodbye, despite the warm blanket of sound, has a somewhat dull composition. A great time for him to try something new again. (PdK)more
