High expectations are often disastrous for a record. Once the disc is in the player after much anticipation, it can often only be disappointing. The third album by the New York indie band Grizzly Bear was also bombarded as record of the year long before its release in many (online) media. It is all the more special then that what is offered easily outweighs the praise in the press. At Veckatimest,
… two interesting developments of recent years come together: the rise of the freak folk and the reappraisal of (the experimental work of) The Beach Boys, Crosby Stills Nash & Young and (the early) Fleetwood Mac. No, Grizzly Bear doesn't make easy songs. The listener must be prepared for the necessary unexpected twists and changes in tempo. Fortunately, the high ambitions have not resulted in an indigestible album. Many songs have strong melodies and beautiful choirs. It is the unique combination of acoustic and experimental sounds that gives the album its definite added value. (MS)more
