The music on the fifth album of the Beastie Boys can be roughly divided into two styles. Most of Hello Nasty is taken up by straightforward hip-hop. On the other hand, there are a number of pop, reggae and instrumental songs with a good dose of psychedelics. The New York trio has succeeded in making the album sound as one through the creative use of diverse samples that form the glue between the 22
… songs. Although the two instrumentals, the reggae-tinged Dr. Lee, Phd. (with Lee 'Scratch' Perry) and the near-pop songs Song For The Man, I Don't Know and Picture This provide much-needed variety, they are the hip-hop songs that cause the most excitement.
