Two years before Nirvana had a major breakthrough with Nevermind (and that hit Smells Like Teen Spirit), the group released their debut Bleach in 1989. In honor of Bleach's twentieth birthday, the album will be released again. Of course in a nice cover with thick booklet and extra DVD with live recordings. At the time, the record was recorded for a paltry 600 dollar for the underground label Sub
… Pop. Much more than Nevermind, this album is in the tradition of punk and trashy rock that the young trio grew up with. But despite the soggy sound, it features a number of memorable songs that showcase Kurt Cobain's burgeoning writing talent. About A Girl still stands proud as a pop song in that respect. Love Buzz (an unlikely cover of Dutch pride Shocking Blue) also still sounds infectious. After this album Dave Grohl was recruited as a drummer and that definitely benefited Nirvana's sound. And the rest is, as it is so beautifully called, history. (PdK)more
