The Prester John of the title was the name of a mythical king of the Middle Ages who ruled the Fountain of Eternal Youth. Scholars believed for sure that the healing water was in Ethiopia, but the source was never found. Centuries later Tommy 'T' Gobena offers a new recipe for rejuvenation: an album full of languid funk with African roots. Tommy is the Ethiopian bass player of Gogol Bordello, but
… on this solo debut he ignores his employer's 'gypsy punk'. As befits a good bass player, Tommy lays down a languid swinging foundation for every song. He colors the music with elements from dub, jazz, funk and reggae. There are guest appearances from singer Gigi, an Ethiopian who lives in New York just like Tommy. Tommy's music is at times disarming and enchanting and is therefore a must for all youthful souls. (PdK)more
