At the end of the nineties it seemed to be over and over for The Posies, one of the most melodic bands in grunge. The second album Frosting On The Beater (1993) contained a few radio hits, but the well-deserved breakthrough was not forthcoming. After the break, the group members turned up with bands like REM (Ken Stringfellow) and Big Star (Stringfellow and Ken Auer) and released several solo albums.
Blood / Candy is the follow-up to Every Kind Of Light (2005), the record that brought The Posies back to the front after a ten-year absence. The band is now just one of the many activities that Stringfellow and Auer engage in. That may be bad for productivity, but it works wonders for inspiration. This is evident on Blood / Candy, a tingly fresh pop album where they have washed off the last bit of grunge melancholy. Gone are the sealed guitar walls to make way for inventive pop arrangements. Easily one of the best records in their oeuvre. (MS)more
