It is Saturday night and you are not sure whether you will go out. Well now, feel free to stay at home and put on the debut of The Parting Gifts. Greg Cartwright of the garage band The Oblivians and Lindsay Hames of the girl band The Ettes have made a simple pop album that is filled to the brim with danceable sixties music. In addition to Cartwright and Hames, musicians from the popular bands The
… Raconteurs and The Black Keys participate. It is impossible to sit still when the uplifting rhythms and shout-along choruses make their appearance and after two and a half minutes give way to new crowdpleasers. The recording sounds, as we can expect from In The Red Records, nice and rudimentary. The name of the record company is once again honored, because with contemporary hi-fi this music cannot measure itself. Strychnine Dandelions does sound like the album was recorded carelessly when the musicians were having a party. Those who stayed at home can now also enjoy this small party. (JE)more
