When The Killers decided to take a short break in 2010, all attention went to the solo work of singer Brandon Flowers. That drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. also working on an album was a lot less interesting. However, the occasional band Big Talk proves with its debut that Vannucci is also a musician to be reckoned with. … on this CD. Without Flowers' signature vocals, Big Talk hardly sounds like the dramatic The Killers. Only the gift of weaving fine melodies into big rock songs makes a comparison between both bands possible. Furthermore, Big Talk just makes old-fashioned American power pop. This type of rock music has been varyingly successful since the seventies and in 2011 it cannot be said whether Big Talk is modern or outdated. This is just old, familiar rock without any frills. The drum kit is effortlessly exchanged for the role of frontman and that is always impressive. Big Talk also delivers the best uncomplicated rock record of 2011! (JE)more
