Carnival Electricos, the new CD from New Orleans funk band Galactic, starts off with distorted Brazilian vocals, loaded with an overdrive that until recently only the Japanese had a patent on. Yes, the message is clear, Galactic has taken a different path with Carnivale Electricos. The name of the album explains everything. Carnivale obviously stands for the carnival that is not only celebrated in
… New Orleans, but of course also in Brazil. Electricos stands for the electrical sound that the record carries with it. The peripherals in their studio are quite addressed, because Galactic has seldom made more use of effects tricks and overdriving. Together this produces a pretty solid, yet very festive album. Heavy funk is interspersed with traditional Indian party music to happily hop on to Brazilian sambas. The guest list also contains a colorful procession of remarkable figures of various feathers. The Indians of Big Chief Juan Pardo & The Golden Comanches walk side by side with two Neville Brothers, various Brazilian beauties with a bunch of feathers up their asses, the necessary rockers from New Orleans, an angry rapper and the 40-member Kipp Rennaissance High School Marching Band . Music lovers should be happy that Galactic does not care about the Brabant carnival.
