The British group Anathema has come a long way since its foundation in 1990. Starting out as a death / doom metal band, the company around the three Cavanagh brothers followed a slow route towards prog rock. A style that seemed to have found its final form on from 2010, a record full of heavy epic rock. This will be continued at Weather Systems. Many of the mid-tempo songs have a slow build-up but
… have more than once wild emotional finals. Weather conditions are used in the texts as metaphors for moods and the sun rarely comes into play. A nice addition is the clear voice of singer Lee Douglas who still provides the pitch black and extremely serious sounds with lighter tones. Above all, Weather Systems is so overly dark and melancholic that as the album progresses and continues to move from one sensitive crescendo to the next, its credibility diminishes. Does the word emoprog already exist? Hereby. (MR)more
