Stevie Jackson is not very young anymore when his debut is released: 43. But Jackson does have a lot of experience with writing songs. He has been part of the Scottish band Belle and Sebastian since 1996. There he plays guitar, sings and writes songs. A good excuse to not debut with a solo album until 43rd. Stevie Jackson is a skilled songwriter who wants to show what he can do on this album. And
… that is precisely the weak point of this CD. It sounds like Jackson has kept all the songs he couldn't get rid of with Belle and Sebastian over the years and has now brought them all together as a solo album. If one song is sweetly arranged with violins, the song after it is cheerful, another one has a rock 'n' roll-like sound, then there is an acoustic guitar song again, etcetera. It is a motley collection of skilfully composed songs, but this is not an album. (HF)more
