Skip & Die is the musical child of the South African singer and visual artist Cata Pirata and the Dutch producer Jori Collignon. Together they do something that has not been done often in the Netherlands, because Skip & Die is inspired by 'tropical bass music': electronic dance music from countries such as South Africa, Angola, Brazil and Colombia. In all these countries, a fertile mix of
… electro and rap on the one hand and the exciting, local rhythms on the other was created in the early 21st century. For inspiration, the duo traveled through South Africa for a few months. Especially in the many black ghettos of that country, this music is very much alive. Song titles like Love Jihad, Jungle Riot and Anti-Capitalista sound grim, but Skip & Die's music is almost bursting with positive energy. Live the group seems to be a real party. This debut album, on the renowned Crammed Discs label, is in any case a promising foretaste. (PdK)more
