The singer and dancer Minyeshu, who lives in the Netherlands, combines traditional Ethiopian music with influences from modern Western music. Since 2005 she has been a welcome guest on international stages. In the Netherlands, for example, she performed with Leoni Jansen, Marco Borsato, the Netherlands Wind Ensemble, New Cool Collective and the Metropool Orchestra. Her personal style is constantly
… evolving. For example, the music on her third studio album Black Ink sounds much heavier and more electronic than on her second album Dire Dawa. This is partly due to the collaboration with producers Stefan Kruger and Stefan Schmidt from Zuco 103 and Paul Willemsen. This modern style can be described as ethiogroove or zarethiopique ('zare' is Amharic for 'today'). Whatever you call it Minyeshu sings with her powerful voice in Amharic and Sidamo thirteen songs that unfortunately are not explained in a CD booklet. But the funky, jazzy and sometimes reggae-like grooves generously invite you to dance. (SvdP)more
