Pop music has numerous groups that may or may not consist entirely of brothers or sisters. The Staves is another such group, formed by the sisters Emily, Jessica and Camilla Staveley-Taylor from Watford, England. Together they make indie folk, sung with three, individually already beautiful voices, which also harmonize beautifully. After a few EPs, their full debut Dead & Born & Grown was
… released at the end of 2012, which was certainly beautiful and extremely tasteful, but had difficulty capturing the power of The Staves as they showed it on stage. Successor If I Was has (that's why?) Got a much more dynamic sound, thanks to producer Justin Vernon, better known as Bon Iver. Especially the much fuller production is striking, with more space for wind instruments, synthesizers, electronics and percussion. Songs like Steady, The Shining and Horizons couldn't possibly have been on the debut, but still sound like a product of the Staveley-Taylor sisters. The Staves get a big boost without endangering their core. Well done. (IV)more
