If you wait long enough, your music will automatically become hip again. The evidence for that pop cliché is again convincingly confirmed by Toto. For years the American group was a beloved head of Jut for music critics and the cartoonists of South Park: too smooth, too perfect, in Toto. But look, in 2015 even Skrillex sometimes put Africa by Toto in his set. Ironically or not, hipsters love the
… once so 'bad' sound of the group and the Toto members themselves are the most surprised by that. XIV, the group's fourteenth album, shows what is so good about Toto. From the carefully measured influences (pinch of pop, dash of rock, grain of prog) to the perfect performance with the cherry on the card the layered choirs that lift each chorus into the sky. It seems as if there is a greater need in times of crisis for a well-cared-for rock sound for the broad masses. With XIV, Toto meets the demand with verve. (PdK)more
