The music of American singer / songwriter Chelsea Wolfe invariably seems to emerge from dark basements where evil forces and occultism reign. Her sixth album Abyss is her most ruthless in that respect. Whereas on previous records such as (2013) and (2011) she still seems to be looking for a certain beauty in the darkness that she evokes, on Abyss the roaring guitars and ritual pounding drums
… dominate. Only when she sings with a thin voice does she slow down, followed by another hurricane of distorted guitars. A sound that is sometimes reminiscent of the ritual rock of . With the mild predecessor Pain Is Beauty, Wolfe seemed to be looking for a wider audience. The jet black Abyss is a fat middle finger to that and especially a heck of an occult rock album. (MR)more
