Contrary to what the name might suggest, the band Boy hides two women: the Swiss Valeska Steiner and the German Sonja Glass. The two met in 2005 in Hamburg, where they trained at the local pop academy. In 2011 Steiner and Glass signed a contract with Herbert Grönemeyers Grönland Records, which released their debut album Mutual Friends in the same year. With that record, full of friendly indie pop
… like the single Little Numbers, Boy slowly but surely managed to gain a foothold in Europe, and later also beyond, as far as the US and Japan. We Were Here, follow-up to their successful debut, shows that Boy clearly wanted more than a repeat of Mutual Friends. The light pop sound of the predecessor has largely been exchanged for a bit more dark, sometimes even melancholic synth pop, as the opener (and also the title track) makes clear. Steiner's beautiful voice fits well with this, and the refined production also impresses. We Were Here has only nine songs; in this case quality over quantity. (IV)more
