Four years after produced by is the five-piece band Portugal. The Man returns with their eighth album Woodstock. Gloomin + Doomin was actually the planned successor to Evil Friends, but it was completely scrapped just before completion. Woodstock, however, sounds anything but like a quick plan B. The pop rock of the Portland quintet sounds sharp, diverse and bursting with ingenious songs. There is
… eager sampling, references to the 70s and influences from hip-hop and R&B. Woodstock is thus another record that gains even more power through the production. Danger Mouse also produced a number of tracks on this album. Somehow you might want to know what Doomin + Gloomin would have sounded like, but when you listen to Woodstock, that thought quickly evaporates. This record is rock solid. (JvQ)more
