Phoebe Bridgers' debut is beautiful. It is good to hear why old hands and run away with this twenties. The American singer / songwriter was born and raised in Los Angeles, but you don't hear sun, sea and sand in her songs. Despite her bleach blonde hair, Bridgers has more to do with fall than summer. On Stranger In The Alps she sings about emotional fluctuations, suicidal thoughts and love affairs.
With her guitar playing she gives the music an extra melancholic layer. Much doom and gloom and yet the songs never get too heavy. This is mainly due to the light vocals of Bridgers, which are easy to hear. She can still make a bereavement ad sound like a catchy press release. Besides melancholy, the musician also throws a good spoonful of nostalgia into her songs. And that is a recognizable and bittersweet emotion. It doesn't make you happy, but homesickness has never sounded so good. (JE)more
