The long-haired American trio Dommengang brought their heavy sludge rock to Los Angeles. Not a bad move because their vintage music follows effortlessly after that of California proto-hard rock bands like and . At the time of the previous album, debut Everybody's Boogie (2015), the band members still lived divided over America. With their gathering in sunny LA, the sound broadened. For example,
… the title track is a dreamy instrumental and Stealing Mills almost resembles a real song. It is striking that the chorus is sung with a false falsetto voice. Dommengang can do better what it is good at, namely playing viscous, largely instrumental blues and hard rock. Fortunately, there are plenty of those hair-waving moments to be found on Love Jail.
