The band members of the Norwegian Årabrot named their group after the local rubbish dump. Not even a strange choice, because Årabrot really is such a band that sees the beauty in ugly things. The guitars scratch and the drums thump while frontman Kjetil Nernes sounds like a prophet of doom with his echoing voice. For the recording of this album, Nernes moved with his wife (and Årabrot pianist
… and singer) Karin Park to a former church in the Swedish countryside. Surrounded by the more than a hundred old Bibles left behind, Nernes did not have to look far for textual inspiration. Årabrot sounds a bit like a punky version of . 'The middle road isn't my thing', says Nernes on the band's website. Fortunately, because there is plenty to discover on this spiky album, which gets deeper under your skin with every listen. (PdK)more
