The title of Braids' fourth album refers to the dark sides of love. Using contrasts such as anger versus hope, the Montreal band explores this concept. The sound of Braids is characterized by the organic undertone and the combination of electronics and rock. This time they omit the lush rhythms and drum machines, giving the whole thing a soft undertone compared to previous albums. The emphatically
… present piano compositions also contribute to this. The album was produced by Chris Walla. He helped Braids frame their sound a bit further, creating a dreamy whole. Sometimes, however, the frustrations have to go out. Then front woman Raphaelle Standell-Preston sings in a rigorous way or the pent-up feelings are spread out broadly, as in the nine-minute Snow Angel. (JvQ)more
