Seemingly out of nowhere, in 2017 suddenly Sevdaliza appeared. This Rotterdam artist with Iranian blood presented herself on and around her debut album as a mysterious total concept, starring in artistic clips and on stage for not only her powerful voice and performance, but also her body and stature. As an imposing, self-proclaimed freak, she seemed to want to express her displacement as a
… Western-Iranian woman. She produced Shabrang herself and is dominated by vulnerability and (again) nudity. Battered, she looks at you from the cover. Beautiful music does. The tempos are always low and there is a hint of Persian mysticism over the slow-motion sounds with influences from Portishead and Radiohead, among others. A highlight is the Iranian Gole Bi Goldoon, which has an enchanting and dark power. In interviews she emphasizes that she wants to show herself on Shabrang. Above all, an inaccessible and almost unearthly beauty emanates from this impressive album. (MR)more
