British Strawbs began in 1964 as an acoustic folk band. Led by the only constant member Dave Cousins, they then grew with the folk rock scene of the early 70s to eventually achieve success in America with the prog and art rock album
Hero And Heroin (1974). Strawbs always continued to exist, with singer, guitarist and songwriter Cousins, as well as second core member guitarist Dave Lambert. Ex-Strawbs
… member Blue Weaver produced Settlement which the band members recorded individually at home during 2020. It harks back to the heyday of albums like From The Witchwood (1971) and Grave New World (1972) with a profound mix of folk rock and symphonic rock. Cousins still manages to sound sincerely tormented in songs in which he expresses the dark spirit of the times. Musically the band is not afraid of bombast in for example the almost hymn-like climax We Are Everyone. It's to Strawbs' credit that after all these years they still manage to sound inspired. (MR)more
