To the by now voluminous list of lockdown albums we can also add All The Good Times Are Past And Gone. Creative couple Gillian Welch and David Rawllings made this album shortly after the outbreak of the corona pandemic, on an old tape recorder, at home in the living room. The repertoire consists of covers (including
Bob Dylan) and some traditionals. The songs are alternately led by Welch and Rawlings.
Both clearly put their own stamp on the sound. Especially the songs in which Welch leads, like the beautiful Hello In There, are outstanding. The relaxed setting, just two guitars and two voices - and everything perfectly in tune - make for an intimate listening experience. That the two don't always find life in isolation easy is immediately apparent from the title. But also in the choice of the last song Y'All Come we hear this. Inviting the neighbours en masse during a quarantine is probably not advisable, but the longing that shines through in their performance is very recognizable. (JV)more
