Hailing from the southern French town of Ondres, metal quartet Gojira have always managed to set themselves apart from other metal bands and thus carve out a niche for themselves. Their music sounds fierce and complex, but also melodic and psychedelic and is steeped in love for the nature of their homeland. On their previous album
Magma (2016), they sounded more accessible than ever by omitting the
… roaring vocals, for example. Those return on Fortitude, interspersed with melodic vocals. Gojira don't shy away from metal clichés, but they always manage to go past them as well, which makes them reminiscent of the groundbreaking Sepultura of the 90s on Fortitude. The members of Gojira give mainly environmentally conscious content to their music and seem to represent both the bombast and the pastoral of nature in their dynamic music. They also do this in a very tight way, with complex rhythms and merciless metal riffs. (MR)more
