On his first three albums, Tom Odell shook the sensitive love songs out of his sleeve without much effort. He didn't need much more than a piano. It takes some getting used to when a drum computer enters the stage in the opening track of his fourth album Monsters. Tom Odell is experimenting with electronic music this time, to the point that it even cracks and squeaks. Not that he has thrown away
… the piano, but gentleness does not prevail this time. At least not in the sound, because in the lyrics, Odell talks about his personal demons and insecurities. That's where the shoe pinches a little, because the supposedly edgy production and Odell's sensitive side never seem to go together. This creates a certain detachment. It's only noise', he sings. It's not noise, but rather noise. Odell goes from pillar to post and misses his chance to go in a new direction. (JvQmore
