During the stirring of the Black Lives Matters movement in 2020, Joy Oladokun had an alternative hit in America with the racy Who Do I Turn To? Not only as a black woman, but also as a queer from the city of Casa Grande (Arizona) she knows better than anyone what it is like to be discriminated against. To develop her music career, Oladokun moved to Los Angeles and eventually settled in Nashville.
It's a pity that the combativeness and openness of her lyrics hardly translate into her music. Oladokun has a warm soul voice that is remotely reminiscent of (her inspiration) Tracy Chapman and the young Joan Armatrading. In her songs, however, pop music and neo-soul are somewhat too sweetly produced. This is at the expense of her powerful songs and rebelliousness. (MR)more
