The period leading up to the release of Heart of a Mother was not an easy one for Douglas Firs frontman Gertjan Van Hellemont. He was told his mother was seriously ill and also lost his grandmother to corona. At the same time, he also became a father. Van Hellemont therefore isolated himself to work on this album. Heart of a Mother is an intimate album, in which you recognize the feeling of a grieving
… family in the music and lyrics. Van Hellemont's brother also plays in the band and can be heard on the piano. Furthermore the album is coloured by soft guitar play and elements of folk and blues. This is also an album where love and sorrow revolve around each other, so a hopeful note can also be detected in the sound. Next to death, new life and motherhood play an important role on this album. (JvQ)more
