French multi-instrumentalist Kit Martin and Turkish singer Merve Erdem met in London in 2016. Together they continued as Kit Sebastian, a name that naturally evokes associations with
Belle & Sebastian. To some extent they make sense. Just like the famous Scots, Kit Sebastian pays a lot of attention to the design of their records and the duo likes to release non-album singles. A band therefore for
… collectors, who could so far indulge in three singles and an album, Mantra Moderne from 2019. As on this debut, Martin and Erdem subtly share on Melodi their fascination with Anatolian psychedelic pop, European beat music, jazz and world music, with a touch of nostalgia for the music of French nouvelle vague films. The best thing about Melodi - which doesn't really have any standouts - is that the duo is able to synthesize the various influences into a convincing whole of its own. It is also worthwhile for fans of Altin Gün. (RME)more
