Time still barely seems to get a grip on Rick de Leeuw (1960). Encouraged by the positive reception of his comeback album Zonder Omweg in 2019, the former Tröckener Kecks frontman dived into the studio with the same Belgian musicians, supplemented on some tracks by Marc De Maeseneer. The saxophonist provides a fresh impulse in, for example, the sprightly opener Laat Het Achter Je and Blood Red
… Moon, one of the standouts on the intriguingly titled Lieg Me De Waarheid. In these songs, just like in the revealing Vreemde Tijden, De Leeuw proves to be a sharp observer of current events. The tradition of putting a translation of a Lou Reed song on every solo album is continued with a successful piano version of Perfect Day. The Amsterdammer brings it all across with his usual enthusiasm and thus proves to be as relevant as ever, both textually and musically. (RME)more
