The Mirrors project consists of 5 musicians surrounding the American fusion group
Snarky Puppy. Band members Michael League, Justin Stanton and Louis Cato, joined by singer-songwriter Becca Stevens and fado singer Gisela João, locked themselves away in a remote country house in Portugal for several weeks in August 2020. They resolved to write a song with each of the possible duos and then record
… it together. Both Snarky Puppy and Stevens' musicians are known as all-rounders, so in theory that could certainly produce surprises. Opener Can't Stop Moving - written by Cato and Stevens - brings together all the elements of modern pop music: dance beats, R&B vocals and even autotune. In the other songs, too, the ensemble proves to be well aware of musical trends. Despite the beautifully produced and well-constructed songs, the ensemble hiccups against hit list clichés. Singer Gisela João fortunately provides some counterbalance. With her dark voice, she takes care of the quietest songs on the album. The beautiful I Don't Blame The Wind - written by João and Stevens - shows that together these musicians can create a special sound. (JV)more
