Canadian folk duo Mama's Broke have toured the world extensively in recent years with their first record Count The Wicked (2017). That they were well received worldwide is not surprising; something universal can be heard in their folk songs. We can hear this on Narrow Line as well: the presence of americana is reflected in the harmonized vocals, the banjo playing of Amy Lou Keeler and the fiddle
… work of Lisa Maria. However, the songs themselves take unexpected directions and drift further away from the American contintent. Opener Just Pick One and title track Narrow Line are fine examples of the moody songs with high-level written arrangements and melodies in which the duo excels. But the record offers more surprises. Pick The Raisins From The Paska is an instrumental duet that not only sounds Irish, but even almost Eastern European. On the a cappella duet The Ones That I Love, Keeler and Maria show how much they sound like one voice. Literally, even; their voices bear an enormous resemblance. Narrow Line is a varied folk record that will undoubtedly take the duo to many corners of the world once again. (JV)more
