Freedom nation

This album was released in Norway back in 2017 and only received worldwide distribution five years later. That's good news because the music of this Norwegian jazz singer has lost none of its power half a decade later. Natalie Sandtorv studied jazz with an emphasis on improvisation and did not shy away from experimentation in her early work. On her first solo album Freedom Nation she opts more for… rock, with unwieldy rhythms, rough guitars, electronics and a sometimes screaming sax. With her worn and dark vocals, her lyrics explore the many facets of freedom and its impossibility. The musical freedom she found on Freedom Nation sounds accessible and at the same time forms a strong statement. (MR)more
