Sessa is the stage name of Brazilian singer-songwriter Sergio Sayeg. As happens to so many, the São Paulo-born musician only really began to long for the music from his homeland when he lived elsewhere. In his case, that "elsewhere" was New York. There he was active in loud rock bands at night, while working in a record store during the day. Estrela Acesa (burning star) is his second album, which
… can be listened to as a highly sensory and psychedelic tour through Sayeg's emotional life. The songs are characterized by a dreamy atmosphere and a low tempo. Stylistically Sessa balances between Brazilian music such as tropicália and bossa nova, singer-songwriters like Leonard Cohen and lo-fi indie, but spiritual jazz can also be heard as an influence. The songs sometimes remain somewhat formless, but Sessa manages to create a beautiful atmosphere with his burning star. (JV)more
