A collaboration between two bassists may not be a good recommendation, at best for bassists. But on this album by Swede Ulf Ivarsson and American Bill Laswell there is, fortunately, no bass duel to be found. Both bassists are also producers and have overseen many special sessions and collaborations, from behind the bass guitar or not. Ivarsson in his home country and as a member of
Paatos among
… others, and Laswell from his own Orange Music Sound Studios in New Jersey. The high spacerock content of Nammu is reminiscent of Laswell being part of the group New York Gong with Daevid Allen in the late 1970s. It's in those drawn-out atmospheres that Nammu finds itself, with deep, dub-related basses, but also jazzy saxophone playing and spacy electronics. The two bassists thus take you on a dark trip.
