It is not strange that DeWolff and Dawn Brothers are drawn to each other. Both Dutch bands know a great love for rock from the 70s and profess this with a great sense of style and nostalgia. Pablo van de Poel (DeWolff) and Bas van Holt (Dawn Brothers) also turned out to have a common weakness for the 60s soul of
Otis Redding,
Sam Cooke and
The Coasters. Inspired, they wrote a collection of songs in
… short order and DeWolff's studio was set up like a modern-day Muscle Shoals or Stax Studio. The entire group, including the horn section, played live in one room, resulting in the authentic, gritty-sounding soul album Double Cream. Every song reminds one of Redding or Cooke, but it is clearly played with a lot of pleasure. Van de Poel and Holt are also convincing vocalists on this spirited get-together. (MR)more
