For her tenth album, Taylor Swift once again worked with super producer Jack Antanoff, who this time breaks her sound more open. The mostly sparse arrangements that dominated
Folklore (2020) and
Evermore (2020) gave those albums a cooler feel. This time Swift comes out warmer, with sultry pop songs in which she omits influences from folk and instead combines dreampop, synthpop and chill-out music.
In addition to that warmth, Swift manages to infuse a form of melancholy into her music, which, with a different sound, still recalls the recognizable atmosphere of her previous albums. The singer wrote the songs of Midnights in response to several sleepless nights. Her thoughts, insecurities and doubts come together in the form of an intimate and haunting album. (JvQ)more
