Hey, what's going on here? On his last album
A Few Stars Apart (2021), we heard a relaxed and contemplative Lukas Nelson. The obligatory lockdown of 2020 had done him good, he had done some reading and, above all, lived healthily. The eponymous opening track of follow-up Sticks And Stones kicks off with the line, "Sometimes when I'm uninspired, I take a hit to get me higher. The subsequent song is
… called Alcohallelujah, as the character in Wrong House enters the wrong house under the influence of mushrooms, thinking he is home. Not only lyrically is Sticks And Stones on the jolly side. The album is dominated by rocking honky tonk and only gains depth in the second half with, for example, the beautiful acoustic ballad Lying or the funky southern rock of All Four Winds. After A Few Stars Apart, the son of Willie Nelson seems above all to feel like rocking and playing live again, with all the accompanying pleasures. (MR)more
