After a difficult period, Mackenzie Scott, aka Torres, showed herself to be a reborn artist on her fifth album
Thirstier (2021), with a world to reclaim. On this follow-up we hear a confident artist who, in the rather crowded field of female singer-songwriters, has now truly found her own niche. It lies on the intersection of quiet listening songs, on which Torres accompanies herself on guitar or
… piano, electronic, sometimes semi-industrial songs and grungy power pop with big choruses. While the latter category set the tone on Thirstier, on What An Enormous Room only Wake To Flowers and Collect fit the description. Much more, the short yet varied album excels in exciting electronic experimentation, with which Torres intersperses the remaining, more subdued songs. Best example is perhaps Jerk Into Joy, in which she alternates a heavenly sung chorus and a hopping beat with the intriguing spoken phrases "What an enormous room, look at all the dancing I can do. Here Torres very briefly calls post-punk band Dry Cleaning to mind, but otherwise the American stands firmly on her own two feet. (RME)more
