After the four project-based albums The Gospel Sessions Vol.1 through 4 and a Christmas record, they now dare to call themselves a real band: Michelle David & The True Tones. Core members Onno Smit and Paul Willemsen know each other from the North Holland funk scene with bands such as
Lefties Soul Connection and
Beans & Fatback. American singer Michelle David made a name for herself in the Netherlands
… primarily in the entertainment world. For example, she was part of theater shows such as The Sound Of Motown and Mahalia. Musical roles that were cut out for her powerful soul voice. The band's second album kicks off almost shamelessly with the classic riff of Curtis Mayfields Move On Up. From there, they build their own song Brothers And Sisters. They deliberately have to rely not on originality but on soul power as it sounded especially in the 1960s. David fulfills a starring role in that and knows how to push things quite a bit vocally. It would be nice if an American producer such as Dan Auerbach or Adrian Quesada would take a look at this excellent Lower Soul band. (MR)more
