The farewell letter from Nirvana's Kurt Cobain and the Nix Generation inspired the reborn Marillion to write Afraid Of Sunlight, an album about the transience of existence. The thread of this eight track album is the pain of being, especially in relation to pop stars and other idols. The opening song Gazpacho is about the rise and fall of boxing champion Jake LaMotta, with references to OJ Simpson.
The closing song King tells the sad story of both Elvis and Cobain. Yet this CD is less depressing than its predecessor Brave and also more accessible. The album contains more than just symphonic rock; just listen to the Beach Boys-esque Cannibal Surf Babe.more
