"Spare" is a self-released CD by the new Dutch four-piece band The Huntman's Apology (named after a poem by Irish poet John Montaque). While the group mainly played covers of Nick Drake and Tim Buckley, among others, "Spare" contains only compositions by singer Erik Boekesteyn. A leading role is also reserved for singer and violinist Dorine Heheman who often gives the songs a folky character through
… her violin playing. The band does best in fragile songs like "Fools we were", "The promise is broken", "Steppin 'out" and the almost 12 minutes (!) Lasting "The land of heart's desire". "Steppin 'out" seems to be the song with the greatest hit potential. A critical note might be the fact that the songs are sometimes a bit too complicated, "Ignoring the ignorance" is an example of this. Because the band doesn't seem to care about the current trends in pop music and just follow their own course, you can speak of an unusual and brave debut! _more
