John Mellencamp, Tom Petty, Black Crowes, Townes van Zandt and Soul Asylum are a few names that come to mind when listening to Beaver Nelson's debut CD The Last Hurray. Nelson is a Texan singer / songwriter with a somewhat haggard appearance, who writes beautiful country / folk songs. His career got off to a slow start. He previously signed contracts with the 'majors' Epic and Columbia, which,
… however, were canceled at the last minute. He eventually managed to get his first CD released on the 'independant' Freedom Records. The Last Hurray is a strong, atmospheric and varied CD with sensitive folky ballads such as Too Much Moonlight and I'm Just Cryin 'and (cheerful) country rock songs such as Company Of Kings, Forget Thinkin', Landed In The Mud and the Rolling Stones-like Stray Dog.
